Nikolayev was founded in 1789 under order of the Russian Tzaritza Yekaterina II by Admiral Gregory Potemkin on the peninsula at the confluence of Ingul and the Southern Bug rivers as a strategic navy shipyard base.
Nikolaev life was completely subordinated to shipbuilding. For almost hundred years the city was the headquarters of the Black Sea Russian Empire Fleet.
In 1862 a commercial port was opened, which triggered the transformation of Nikolaev. The city becomes large industrial center in southern Ukraine.
In the postwar period Nikolaev was the biggest shipbuilding center of the USSR employing directly over 100.000 people. The biggest USSR vessels, including aircraft carriers, were built in Nikolaev.
For over a hundred years Nikolaev Shipbuilding University graduates top specialists, working worldwide.
The city in over 220 years has evolved from a small wooden shipyard in large industrial, business, political and cultural center of southern Ukraine.
In 2010 Vladimir Matveev, successful Russian entrepreneur, decided to invest in a yachtbuilding enterprise and Nikolaev was the perfect place to establish a new yacht builder, collecting the best human resources and technology available up to date. Thus Fifth Ocean Yachts was born.
A Passion for Perfection
From a personal dream that began more than a decade ago, I created Fifth Ocean Yachts that has emerged as Ukraine’s most respected large yacht builder. The dream lives on today through the work of an innovative boat-building organization. Passion and craftsmanship mesh skilfully with 21st century technologies.
As Ukraine’s largest Mega Yacht builder, Fifth Ocean Yachts has also forged alliances with some of the world’s biggest names in boating to produce a range of world-class yachts. They include designers such as world-renowned Dutch naval architects Jaron Ginton, Azure Yacht design & Naval Architect, Guido de Groot design who contributed powerful new running surface design to many of our Yachts.
We also cooperate with Spanish naval architect Inigo Toledo from Barracuda Yacht Design, Turkish naval architect Ibrahim Karatas from Karatas Yacht Design, Italian naval architect Roberto Starkel from Studio Starkel and Canadian Naval Architect Michael Schutte from Brilliant Boats. All amazing and well-known designers, they all assisted Fifth Ocean Yachts to set industry benchmarks for quality, refinement and performance. Experience the passion as you realize your boating dreams or your business ambitions, with the fine products of Fifth Ocean Yachts.
To become the Ukrainian world leader in the marine industry through delivering the ultimate pleasure boating experience.
Mutual Respect - We work with a spirit of achievement, fulfilment and empowerment, encourage collaboration and teamwork amongst employees and suppliers, and recognize the outstanding efforts of all who create our products.
Balance - We strive to deliver fair value, display an unerring commitment to be the best, show responsibility to the community, act with honesty and integrity and achieve best quality and best cost.
Vision - We look to the future, welcome changes, implement innovation in people we employ and the products we create.
Our Strength of Character
While the construction of every yacht is an art itself, the design, planning and building of the Fifth Ocean Shipyard is no less impressive. All departments are within the Okean Shipbuilding site in Nikolaev.
To craft the finest steel and aluminum custom yachts and deliver tailor-made dream to our owners.

Azure Yacht Design and Naval Architecture is an independent Dutch design office dedicated to providing design, engineering, construction supervision, yacht management and support for new building or refitting of luxury motor yachts from 30 meters and more. Azure Naval Architects comprises a team of twenty talented designers, yacht architects and engineers, many of whom gained their professional experience in companies across the world. In addition to the expertise of our personnel, you will also benefit from their contagious enthusiasm. They will always support your thinking processes and strive to find the best and most beautiful solutions available. Our people are innovative where possible, while always keeping a close eye on reliability and the quality that has given Azure global renown. Azure is owned and run by Hugo van Wieringen, Erik Spek and Onne Logger. Hugo was the former chief designer and owner of De Voogt Naval Architects. Hugo, Erik and Onne have extensive experience in yacht building.
Michael Schutte is the founder and Principal Naval Architect of Brilliant Boats, a full service naval architecture and marine engineering consultancy. After ten years of working behind the scenes on projects from fast ferries, to large motor yachts, to even helping out on a recent James Bond film, this six-strong team is now stealing the limelight for itself. Mega Motor Yachts like Forty Love, the 45m Sunrise "Twilight" and exotic superyacht sailing catamarans like the Blubay 72’ and 100’ are the some recent projects, along with design and engineering for underwater habitats like the Poseidon Undersea Resort and the H20me. Michael holds degrees in Industrial Design (Leicester, 1986) and Naval Architecture from Southampton Institute (1993). He came to Naval Architecture with a successful background in industrial design and the manufacture of furniture, corporate interiors and components for the automotive and aircraft industries. After 25 years as a design professional, and over 17 years as a Naval Architect, he offers, with the Brilliant Boats team, a powerful combination of design flair, creative solutions based on real-world manufacturing experience, and the best 3D design and engineering tools in the business.
Guido de Groot has graduated with a bachelor of science degree with honours from the Art Centre College of Design in Pasadena (USA) and worked for more than six years as a car designer in Paris for the French car manufacturer Citroën. His love affair with yachts began back in 1986 when he saw the fourth "Highlander" close to completion at the De Vries (Feadship) yard. Awestruck by the majesty of this 45-metre masterpiece, he started drawing yachts in parallel with his career in car design. The next decade was spent learning everything there was to know about luxury yachts. He launched Guido de Groot Design in 1997, specializing in innovative interiors and exteriors for both luxury motor and sailing yachts.
Since those days, Guido de Groot’s design office has expanded to the point that it works with an international clientele and collaborating with yards building yachts in Italy, Russia, The Netherlands, Taiwan and Turkey. Many of the projects combine interior and exterior design. The sizes and types of yachts also range from a 20 metres sailboat through to a 65 metres exploration luxury yacht, and include fast motor cruisers and more sedate displacement yachts.
Ibrahim Karatas after graduating from the Technical University of Istanbul, Naval Architecture faculty in 1988, has started his career in Bodrum by drafting the gulets; the traditional wooden yachts of Turkish coast and Mediterranean within a Bodrum based design office. During his master degree on Naval Architecture at the same school and following 8 years, he has been employed by the well established yacht building yards and organizations in Tuzla as site & building engineer. The market demand at this time was more on the engineering services and designs that also tells how to do hints. He has established the KYD as design and engineering only company at 1996. Few years later this good start he has also became a partner to a building company who has dealt with steel, aluminum, composite and wood materials and fast monohull motor yachts to power catamarans and long range sailing cruiser vessels in a short time period between 1999 and 2002.
Jaron Ginton was born and grew up in Israel. At the age of 18 he became an officer and a captain of a patrol vessel of Israeli navy. Later he was a captain on a motor yacht doing diving charters in the Red Sea, and later a captain of a wooden charter schooner; also in the Red Sea. Than he bought an old wooden 9 m sloop and sailed with it the Mediterranean and across the Atlantic Ocean. During the period of using these boats, he felt that things were not designed as he wanted them to be and he felt he could do better. So, at the age of 29 he started the university, graduating as a naval architect at the age of 33, with the background of more than 50 000 sea miles.
In 1991 he founded GINTON Naval Architects BV, which field of expertise is in the design of ocean going yachts by our multi-disciplined staff. This combined with an extensive background in the design of high performance naval craft.
Born in 1952, Roberto Starkel graduated in Naval Engineering but his adventure in the world of design began when he was still a university student: in 1975 his professor of mechanics commissioned him a project to build a 7.15-metre competition sailing boat, which successfully competed in the world championships. Since then, Roberto Starkel has not stopped designing sailing boats and mega-yachts.
Roberto Starkel has been in charge of his own studio since 1980 which has designed many famous yachts: from the 60-foot Ikarus of Massimo D’Alema - the famous Italian politician - to the Perini Navi 46m HERITAGE, from speed to Luxury!
Studio Starkel is based in a loft in the centre of Triest, Italy, a city with rich maritime history located in the North of Adriatic sea.
The company consists of a core of four members: all team members at Studio Starkel share the same genuine interest and enthusiasm for what they are doing, thereby creating a dynamic atmosphere, which brings to the yachting industry many winning, innovative concepts, and breakthrough designs.
After 5 years of work at design studio Nuvolari-Lenard Armin Koren decided to open his own design studio VenetianDesign. Armin Koren started by himself in the end of 2008 and in the 2011 Paolo Dose joined him and now is his partner. They are doing exterior and interior design for the yachts. They are trying to design their yachts, building a brand name, so all the boats, yachts and mega yachts have the same character.
Armin Koren is responsible for designing of exterior and Paolo - designing all the interiors.
They have also subcontractor Andrea Agrusta, technical engineer, who makes possible to offer to the shipyards technical part of the project.
To this date, they have designed a lot of the different project: from 5 meters electric boat to the longest 85meters mega yacht, which will be presented this September at Monaco Yacht Show.
They are designing also sailing boats so our specter of the design is all range.
One of the most progressive & recently talked about naval architecture studios are Barracuda Yacht Design from Madrid.
In charge of eight staff at Barracuda is Iñigo Toledo, who began his career working with dignitaries such as German Frers in Buenos Aires and Reichel/Pugh in the USA.
As Barracuda became more established, Iñigo was recognised for his innate technical ability by becoming selected as part of the Project Management team responsible for the design and construction of the 42m Spanish royal yacht, Fortuna, in 1998. Completed in only two years and achieving speeds of up to 70knots from gas turbine engines, Fortuna represents ground-breaking design & technology even by today’s standards.
Other notable achievements during Iñigo’s past has included acting as Technical Coordinators for Spanish syndicates on two previous America’s Cup campaigns, in 1992 and 2007.
With an illustrious and enviable track record behind them, Barracuda as a company have made their name tackling the more complex and sometimes less glamorous aspects of naval architecture and design.
In 2010, for example, their unique and innovative solution for incorporating no less than 24x large windows in the hull of the Pendennis built 32m s/y Akalam, earned the company a well deserved finalists’ nomination in the World Superyacht Awards the following year.
Sergio Cutolo started his career with a Naval Engineering degree from the "Federico II" university in Naples, Italy. As a young engineer he started working at Cetena, the research arm of the Fincantieri group in Genoa.
During 1985 -1989 he was working at Baglietto technical office, participating in the design of several iconic yachts, such as Al Fahedi, Adler, Baroness, Lady Anfimar, Chato, Topshida, and Pia W.
In 1989 he moved to Messina, Sicily to be the Vice Technical Director of the Rodriquez Shipyard. He participated in the design and construction of the first and second generation of fast monohull ferries for commercial transport from 50 to 100 meters and capable of cruising at over 40 knots with complex propulsion systems. In 1991 as a part of the technical office at Baglietto, he designed many yachts such as Romita, Maffy Blu, Alba, Elsewhere, and Opus.
Eleven years since obtaining his degree and after an intense career in various shipyards, he decided to take a great leap of faith and founded his own design studio. So, in 1995 Hydro Tec was founded with the vision and broad business culture based on the founder’s varied experiences and with the capability of combining the precision of a small shipyard with the structure of a large industrial organization geared towards a professional market.
Red Yacht Design is formed by naval architect Fatih Surekli, architect Cana Gokhan and industrial designer Serdar Sisman, as a composition of three prerequisite disciplines for yacht design in 2012, in Istanbul. The multidisciplinary, dynamic and innovative team use many years’ experience from the boat industry for yacht design, naval architecture and directing efficiently the manufacturing process.
For many years, Red members have worked at Turkey’s biggest companies, shipyards, and design offices such as Proteksan Turquoise, Numarine and finally Scaro Design who made the multi-awarded PeriYacht Series with different ranges from 29m to 41m. In 2013, RED wins the concept up to 30m best design award at Design Et Al Yacht and Aviation Awards in London.
Design approach principles of RED are: Innovation, producibility and sustainability. From first styling studies in conjunction with the general arrangement to full technical details, RED provides a complete design service, working closely with the owner from the earliest stages and accurately establishing their requirements.
